This was a lot more fun prior to the iPhone trivializing this ability, but you can do things like pointing to the nearest Starbucks or bank with an approximate distance without knowing anything but what you're seeing on the current block.

This. The great cities are palimpsests. The past (& future) of them coexist with the present and sometimes a skerry of a much older form of the city will persist for an unfeasibly long time. They can be a true joy to wander through, if you're lucky enough to stumble across one.

If you know about that one big earthquake, you can see the division line from it, where all the pre-burned blocks are aligned one way and the new stuff is aligned at 45-ish degrees to it.
