My life got surprisingly better after o started treating the news like this without first recruiting 30 part-time analysts.https://twitter.com/visakanv/status/1214726737302392832 …

First thoughts: “...” Second thoughts: “Which decision do you make which should be instead delegated to a research briefing written by a 24 year old liberal arts graduate you’ve never met?” First thoughts: “... OK now you’re piling on.” Second thoughts: “They call you an eyeball”

Yeah, I think this is the key thing folks don't internalize. "More information" is only helpful if that information helps you make better decisions. Like information isn't useful in-and-of-itself, it's only useful if it's relevant to your decisions.

Every 2-4 years I make major decisions based on what I've read in the news, but really, I would much rather just read a compilation of the past 2 years of news every other October.

Completely agree - and yet. If no one read the news, democracy does not work. Sure, we can read it just before the election. But in between the powers that be could do whatever they wanted because no one pays attention and starts calling their rep.

It’s surprising how angry some folks get when I point out that the news: A) rarely helps me improve my (or anyone else’s) life B) often includes propaganda and falsehoods C) isn’t the same thing as journalism D) is inferior to my curated twitter list (which surfaces journalism)
