First thoughts: “But I have to read the newspaper every day to stay up to date.” Second thoughts: “On what topic?” First thoughts: “You know, current events and politics and stuff.” Second thoughts: “What’s last major decision you changed based on what you read in newspaper?”

First thoughts: “...” Second thoughts: “Which decision do you make which should be instead delegated to a research briefing written by a 24 year old liberal arts graduate you’ve never met?” First thoughts: “... OK now you’re piling on.” Second thoughts: “They call you an eyeball”

(Same, just riffing with alternate presentations of the idea with the cheeky knowledge that it eventually leads to the same conclusion

I once mocked up a script that ran over the reddit API and only showed news that was "genuinely outlier" (based on historical levels). Essentially a reddit homepage with by default nothing on it. Couldn't figure out the right subreddits to run it on tho

Yeah, "the news" is just infotainment and sensationalism. I hear enough of it second hand from people IRL and via social media - and even that strong filter results in poor SNR. In the extremely rare case of real news which may actually interest me, I look it up myself.

Same. Stopped actively reading daily news and found that the “important” stuff tends to find you through friends/colleagues anyway - after which you can decide to research further. It’s a great way to adjust the signal to noise ratio.

It really sinked in when I learned it's called 'News' vs 'Information' like in Poland. Same for 'Social Media' vs 'Online Community'.

For people who love these subjects, they do change what we do right away and what we plan to do in the future. We also know who is worth reading and who isn't worth it. And yes you are fully capable of doing this too, just set parameters, times of day, subjects.
