I believe I heard a station attendant, apprising a coworker that the train got here five minutes late and required five minutes to turnaround, say “We can do it in three if we hustle.”

Japanese logistics is fascinating, partly as an engineering matter and partly for successfully inculcating a culture where someone cleaning trains on the second busiest day of the year would hustle to save 120 seconds.

Announcement just now: “Although responding to a passenger in distress resulted in us arriving late into Tokyo, departing Tokyo 8 minutes behind schedule, and departing Shin-Yokohama 5 minutes behind schedule, we believe we will arrive in Nagoya as scheduled.”

Announcement continued: “There exists the possibility that we will not arrive in Nagoya as scheduled, depending on conditions en route. Thank you for your patience and cooperation; we deeply regret the inconvenience.”

That's interesting. I rode it for the first time ever yesterday and they were a couple of minutes behind, resulting in them starting to roll before we'd even gotten into the car. My five year old nearly fell. It wasn't great.

In September the shinkansen I boarded was canceled after a short delay because "of a fatality". That's all they announced (had to catch a cab from Kyoto to Osaka to make my flight in time)

Those trains are a marvel of technology and service. We loved riding them while traveling in Japan.

We had a delay of 5 mins when there in October, which put it behind another train. The platform attendant came up to us multiple times to make sure we were aware of what was going on and which train to take. Her communication with broken English was wonderful and very comforting!
