There's also a bit of identity management at play, I'd imagine. I live, work, and send my kids to school in the Potrero Hill neighborhood of SF. I'm an avid Boston sports fan. These are two of the strongest group affiliations I identify with.

There's a Boston sports bar that I walk past on my way to work every day. Needless to say, I strongly identify with that establishment. During the hockey playoffs, I'm there multiple times per week. The rest of the year, months may go by without stopping in for more than one beer

This is how all finance worked before widespread coinage. People used fairs in little towns to settle up all their accounts with butcher, innkeeper, greengrocer, tailor, etc.
