@PatrickRothfuss? I think you'd enjoy the microeconomics of The University's admissions process and tuitions. From what I remember, it was based on the applicant's propensity to pay and what they brought to the table. -

I agree in most cases, but in this case it's pretty clear that they have oligopoly on magic usage/talent. And then extract pretty high rents from all fiefdoms. So the economics likely work out
