I don't know what to do with this belief, because on the one hand I rather like many institutions, but I don't particularly think they have a right to nosh on peoples' time and talents, and I think it feels unlikely that this genie goes back in the bottle.

What do you think were the innovations in talent allocation?

The most important one is capitalism, broadly writ, but one can make a long list of optimizations that distinguish 2019 US from 1919 US, including vastly less employment discrimination, IQ tests laundered through widespread college credentialing, movement to cities, etc.

Every so often I think about the ongoing efforts to improve efficiency and productivity and I just picture a net around us, getting tighter and tighter. Yeah, I'm real fun at parties.
