I’ve been practicing this the past few months. There are a lot of things and people I don’t like, even want to completely avoid— because they don’t mesh with *me.* Doesnt mean they’re Objectively Evil. I try to make that clear whenever I can, esp on the trigger-happy internethttps://twitter.com/heyjenbartel/status/1207067564360306688 …

I wish more people felt comfortable admitting that they just don't like something for no good reason, rather than trying to justify their personal feelings with arguments about morals. Have the confidence to dislike that thing without pressuring everyone else to agree with you

I like describing this sort of reaction with aesthetics, as in "I have an aesthetic preference for coffee from cute-little-local shops [but do not judge people who drink at Starbucks and do not pretend that Starbuck's success is due to being Big Evil Corporate Coffee]."

(This offered as an example; while it's true that I have an aesthetic preference for cute-little-local-coffee I think Starbucks probably gets 80% of my coffee spend due to being right next door to work and my favorite two places not recruiting enough loyalists to pay rent.)

Hmmm. I like that for some scenarios! For others where my beliefs are pretty deeply rooted in values that mean a lot to me, but I don’t necessary think people who disagree are bad people, just value other things I can’t relate to... “aesthetic” seems to downplay my values 🤔

Vegetarianism may be a good example. I’ve never hated people who ate meat without care, I don’t think they’re bad people who deserve any punishment. But my values go deeper than aesthetics.

Starbucks gets my money simply because their ordering process is lowest friction. Order on app, go to store, pick up, leave.

I have an aesthetic preference for coffee that doesn't taste burnt, therefore no Starbucks which I think tastes burnt. I have found that this is an oddly rare preference. People tend to equate bitter with "strong" and therefore energizing. Which is backwards.pic.twitter.com/mepYBQ8232

And when purchasing a cup of coffee is this complicated, think about the decisions that actually have consequences.
