Somebody should do a piece on boss, buddy, sir, hon, and similar phrases used in the US to non-specifically specifically identify the party one is talking to.

It's interesting that people use honorifics like "Chief" or "Big Guy" in this generic way. Also--a bit affected/less natural but still extant--"guvner" or "squire" in the UK.
