“The primary advantage of college is networking” seems to be believed by a lot of people, relatively few of whom avail themselves of the opportunity to network with undergrads or their professors in any given month.

heh, advice like this is why stanford literally has rules against this https://ose.stanford.edu/policies/event-planning-policies/fronting … (of course partnerships are possible. I mean people should be careful of framing, funding, and goals; and should put students' best interests first.)pic.twitter.com/2eotE7Ul4F

His take is about individuals though, not organizations.

I do this a lot for recruiting. If you email a random comp sci student and offer to run a workshop that explains e.g. how github is actually used in the real world if they book a room and bring 20 friends, many will take you up on it.

find the president of the college ACM they ALWAYS want to have events with pizza paid for by someone else

Even easier than that. 1. Find a university department of interest. 2. Get on its mailing list for seminars. 3. Show up. 4. Ask questions. They will even buy you refreshments occasionally if you pick the correct department.

I've found that offering mentoring and design review for senior design projects is a good way to stay in touch with both students and professors. And yes, if you buy them pizza they will show up by the dozens.

I agree that people’s revealed preferences seem to be different from their stated preferences in this area. For example if college is really about networking, wouldn’t taking classes at several different area colleges be optimal (to maximise networking)?

As an undergrad myself, I can tell you the "followed by pizza" part is probably the most important for engagement
