I’m amazed by the sheer number of friends and coworkers over the last year that have asked for Tokyo/Japan recommendations… It felt like NO ONE was interested in traveling there ~2010 when I was living in Tokyo.

I think it went from being extremely off the beaten path to a plausible destination in the way that London is a plausible destination, largely due to Internet (especially mobile phones) making the language and logistical barriers feel less towering than they were previously.

Did you learn Japanese before moving to Japan?
-
Yes; 3 years in university (+1 year of study abroad). Moved over soon after graduation.

Personal travel is the real luxury good in this era - a lifestyle flex in a post luxury goods era.

I agree, and sadly this has destroyed its value as a signal for “this person is interesting”. It turns conversations I‘d be interested in, into competitive matches.

I live in Kyushu countryside, lived in different places in Japan since 2006, imagine the number of times I have to tell my story... including during interviews or clients mtg. Usually it still ends with : and when are you planning to go back to France ? :-/
