It's a really interesting comparison to Paypay and the similar Japanese wallet apps, which are much, much busier in terms of design and extremely optimized for QR code payments (which is where all the money is long-term for them).

I find it interesting that Square is willing to eat the (admittedly tiny) debit card / account funding interchange. Are retained, non-withdrawn balances enough to pay for that? Or is there a different long term play?

To quote the Wire: "Buy for $1, sell for $2." If money stays in the ecosystem, great news for them eventually due to interest income. If money leaves the ecosystem, it will often leave at higher interchange rates than their blended rate for getting it into the ecosystem.
