(From a land use perspective basically anything you did with that footprint is a better use of it contingent on the new thing being 9+ stories, which it would easily, easily sustain due to traffic patterns. Apartments, condos, office space, mixed use development, etc etc.)

The JR system in Japan works the same way. Seems to be a great way to make the public/private partnership for rail work.

SF actually just updated the zoning in this area to allow more density https://sfplanning.org/central-soma-plan … Mostly office, completely unclear whether they plan to allow enough housing to be built to match

That block is getting some 60 story towers (plans already approved I think) The Creamery coffee shop parcel is going to turn into a skyscraper

In theory, that's a temporary station - the trains are supposed to eventually run another mile to the Transbay terminal. And there's lots of 10+ story development in the last 10 years on the south side of it, when I moved to SF in 2011 almost none of South Beach existed.
