I think that “culture” is an extremely inadequate explanation with respect to the relative lack of success of Japan in software (except in all the places where that overgeneralization is false) or the relative lack of success of the United States in automobiles (ditto).

Thiel actually made a comment on this, and he notes the stopping of imports of “American” culture like golf, speaking English, etc. Now they just drop the facade and look inwards

I think xenophobia alone will not allow this to happen. Brilliant immigrants from around the world just don’t go to Tokyo to build companies.

The numbers have been increasing. The quality of life draw is significant and it has apparebtly gotten slightly easier for various companies to recruit foreign talent.

I don’t know Tokyo (yet), but I’m blown away by the quality of life improvements in Holland. If the US can’t build people-oriented working infrastructure then it’s going to be game over eventually.
