If you take revealed preferences seriously, it's possible that the most important parts of the school experience are the ones that adults will willingly choose to subject themselves to. This leads me to the terrifying thought that I may have underestimated gym class.

My kids have all enjoyed not ever going to school.

This would be an *extremely* attractive option to me if we were living in the US.

You may like the Taking Children Seriously parenting philosophy. You got maybe 1/4 of the way there on your own.http://fallibleideas.com/taking-children-seriously …

It makes a certain amount of sense, when your kids ask, "wait, why do I have to spend 35 hours/week on this?" to at least think a bit about your answer :-)

my moms response to that was to take me to the library and show me the law that said I had to

The history class you describe doesn't seem that crazy to me. I did cfa and actuary prep in my free time for several years in my late 20s, and that included structured lectures and quizzes. Part of the motivation was it might advance my career but it was also for pleasure.

Afaict the maximally true (though not very motivational) answer to that is “because when you’re an adult you’ll have to go to work every day.” And that inappropriate backwards-propagation is at the heart of my issues with traditional schooling.

Being ok answering this with “because mommy and daddy have things to do” or “to see your friends” had definitely made school easier for us

The amount of history podcasts I've listened to is revealing. But also easy because there's no essays to write about it. I never knew history had so much to offer in school.
