“Schools should be less like prisons” is also a safe belief. You can justify lots of pedagogical approaches that way. Many of the trendy ones adopt major elements from that.

Modern school is so pathologically insulated that students can only really achieve mobility by playing political games with each other. So naturally, this is what they spend most of their energy doing. Unfortunately most solutions seem to be outside the Overton window (for now).
