A friend had a Nintendo. I played it once, was hooked, and asked the friendly local librarian how one made video games. Learned Basic from the book How To Make Video Games. Didn’t own a computer for another 5 years or so so this was also my gateway drug for algebra.https://twitter.com/Initialized/status/1197631627167502338 …

Did you ever compile anything you had coded on graph paper?
-
No, lost it before I got a computer. My document retention pre Dropbox left a lot to be desired.

“How do you write Basic without a computer?” I wrote Basic with pencil and paper, then rode my bike to Radio Shack and typed it in to their TRS-80

Reminds me of stories of how
@freebsdfrau got started. I was later to the game. Started programming with QBasic 4.5 for DOS, using sample code I downloaded from a local BBS. Got into unix when I asked a random person on IRC how you run your own server so you can be the admin.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Funny enough growing up in TZ, we were being taught basics in HTML (grade 10) and the lack of resources from school means we would have to write on paper, which was then checked by our teachers. Luckily I knew how to code as I had a Mac, but it was tough for fellow colleagues.

I thought I was the only kid who had a "Basic programs notebook" without owning a computer. I never "ran" them at Turing machine level though, just imagined how they'd work.

I worked @ discount store during Xmas to buy a Vic20 and a book about Machine Language because my best friend told me to. Made my first game a month later - a bad Donkey Kong ripoff with three levels. Had to use graph paper & write the code first too.

Tho I’m not actually “in tech” now it’s useful background
