You will be unsurprised that an interim receiver for a bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange doesn’t make uniformally great technical decisions, including “We disconnected Internet service [for their office] to prevent remote access [to their machines at the office].”

I’m curious - why is that a bad idea? Probably would be one of the very first things I would do.

Not a bad idea, but doesn't capture the benefit they think comes from it. They very plausibly have e.g. a wifi hotspot sitting in the corner that isn't "the Internet connection", even *without* planning future adversarial action against someone turning off the main connection.
