Previous examples of cultural diffusion include Christmas, which is Japan’s Valentine’s Day, and more recently Halloween, which is essentially a “young’uns let their hair down” version rather than the traditional kid-focused US deployment of the holiday.

I thought it’s not so much about long weekends as it is a clearance sale before Christmas restocking. And that’s why a lot of countries adopt this day, also with all sorts of fake price drops to prey on people’s sense of urgency while giving a plausible reason for a sale day.
