It’s a not-real holiday which exists the day after a real holiday and which achieved prominence because of commercial pressures to make use of a shopping-friendly weekend, and Amazon says “Hmm basically none of that translates but Japan isn’t opposed to spending money *shrug*.”

Previous examples of cultural diffusion include Christmas, which is Japan’s Valentine’s Day, and more recently Halloween, which is essentially a “young’uns let their hair down” version rather than the traditional kid-focused US deployment of the holiday.

Incidentally for Amazon’s Black Friday they’re discounting black products and products with black in the name. “No, you’re pulling my leg.”pic.twitter.com/3KeDcRUmfW

A similar thing happened in Canada. Traditionally stores used to have their biggest sales on the day after Christmas (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxing_Day ). But retailers have moved their big sales to Black Friday in recent years, even though it doesn't land on a holiday in Canada.

That became a thing in Brazil, too. Being so out of context to us, it got a meaning for itself, so here there's also "black week" and "black month." Heck, there are VW Vans selling bananas and calling it Black Friday - the whole year around.

Doesn't hurt that they have a very multi cultural team here too, for having these sort of out of the box projects...

I am curious if Alibaba will try to extend ‘singles day’ in other markets. Similar opportunity to explore new markets for a region-specific shopping experience

They sold the whole Middle East on it already. Black Friday is A THING there now. Cultural infusion at its best (?)

I misread "sell Japan" as "For sale: Japan" thinking it was a cataloguing error
Same thing has happened here in Ireland and the UK. We don't celebrate Thanksgiving, but Black Friday / Cyber Monday is increasingly becoming a thing, especially for online retailers.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
