You could also mention more traditional mainstays of culture like e.g. religion as affecting those intellectual interests, but the science fiction thing sticks out to me not because it is low status but because it had extremely leveraged, focused impact on the future through this

*shrug* It is not obvious that explicit identification of them makes sense since they may not have signed up to direct investment decisions and since some of their fans have poor introspection on this issue.

Well, science fiction is a cultural expression of ideas about the future, usually in dialogue with the latest and most exciting developments in science, the problems the scientific community is most anxious about and the general feeling about the future. So it makes sense.
