Walking past a school in Tokyo. Ruriko: “That’s going to be Lillian’s elementary school.” “Oh nice.” “Yeah it will be nice to have the family back there.” “Oh did your mother go there?” “No my great grandfather co-founded it.” “Wait what.” “Yeah had to get out of samurai-ing.”

Unrelated but curious, how did you and Ruriko settle on a name for Lillian?

It happens to be my grandmother’s name, reusing which is a McKenzie family tradition, and is pronouncible on both sides of the Pacific. We came up with a Japanese reading for it in an untraditional traditional fashion. (A fortune teller was involved.)

(There are a lot of ways to write Lillian. My understanding is the fortune teller saw the right number of strokes in the stars and then Ruriko and her mother narrowed down to the characters. 利々杏)
