It is a high status and in controversial belief to say that writing makes you better at substantially everything white collar people do. It is more controversial to believe being able to code makes you more effective at everything white collar people do.

This is one of those “Hmm I feel like I’ve felt too many hours of my life arguing this point I guess I’ll just exploit it until the market corrects.” beliefs.

“Exploit until the market corrects” is one of my preferred ways to deal with sustained disagreements. I am told this is intellectually bankrupt. I therefore commit to exploiting it until the market corrects.

What’s your view on the rising “no code” movement where people create code without having to write it?

I feel like that’s primarily a marketing phrase rather than being reflective of technical reality. I do not love this marketing phrase, either for engineers or for aspirants. I’m broadly supportive of artifacts which make professionals more productive, which include compilers.

One reason that I do not like the marketing phrase is because I think people who use it assume they will be credited with a near-engineer status. I bet that instead it will be used to exclude them from “real engineering”, much like some try to exclude e.g. front-end engineers.

I will also note that there is a reason I say “front-end engineers” and not, say, “webmasters” or “people who make web pages.”
