There are tactical microoptimizarions but e.g. if you’re selling to hospitals or BigCo they routinely take forever to pay and that is just All In The Game, Yo, which is one reason it’s All In The Quote, Yo.

“Define ‘forever.’” I once got a net 60 invoice paid net 90. Weeks. In the hospital’s version of reality, they were on time.

1. pre-qualify by looking at their business 2. charge 30-50% deposit up front 3. take payments at milestones, & make it clear all work halts unless paid 4. net 14-net 30 5. direct deposit / ACH only - no checks (this only works if you’re super high end)

oh and when i did design, i used to only do consulting after they paid a fix price for a usability review ($3500-5000) which is a report they could keep.

Part of this comes down to how you structure engagements and how you bill for the work (I charge upfront and don’t deliver anything until some payment has hit the bank). Lateness happens, it is all in the game, yo, that being said, 90 weeks is disrespectful the world over IMO.

This took me longer than it should've to learn as a contractor. Just don't work for the people who set off your "these guys aren't going to be reliable" detector. Which, I suppose, said detector may require some negative experiences to calibrate.

I have a client who hassles me for invoices then pays them on receipt. Needless to say, they get priority if they need anything fast.

IME the companies that are the worst at paying invoices on time are the ones that are much bigger than you are. They take advantage of their size and reputation with their customers to screw their suppliers.
