Nobody ever says "I wonder what algorithms are running Harvard admissions" because people somehow think that their racial discrimination department is bespoke and artisanal and does not have spreadsheets or a workflow engine.

remember when algorithms were supposed to fix (age/sex/race/etc) discrimination? Thing is if there were a bit better regulations about it they could in fact fix this kind of stuff.

I live in Sweden and I was surprised how easy it was to get a mortgage as an immigrant, turns out there were regulations that didn't allow for discrimination based on nationality or citizenship status in credit score.

Algorithms are processes for generating outcomes, and outcomes are valued according to incentives. Algorithms may be blamed, but often the real problem is found in the incentives. We need to design incentive systems so that our algorithms solve the right problems

Yeah, forgetting that people can and do execute algorithms as well is pervasive. And a lot of "bad algorithms" are souped up versions of bad processes that we also need to reform :/

To lay people, algorithm = computer in control, procedure/process = human in control
