Curiously, San Francisco's brokenness may turn out to be a driver of innovation. I spoke recently to a founder considering a GitLab-style all-remote model for a new startup. Partly because it seemed the future, but at least as much because he himself wanted to get out of SF.

Coming from Tokyo, where taxis are everywhere, clean, reliable, and the drivers are generally pleasant, at first I didn’t fully get how amazing Uber was until I experienced taxis in San Francisco. Suddenly it all made sense :)

I wonder if we could get Japanese entrepreneurs to go to SF for a year and then debrief them asking "OK, what American institution *clearly* needs to exist back home?" It feels like there are a lot of intellectual arbitrage opportunities in both directions.

From japan to global ecosystem, the language issue continues to be the biggest bottleneck, affecting which news we read, how we write tech docs (usually in Japanese) etc. being bilingual gets too much credit in japan, and good devs in japan are rarely bilingual.
