"That's not how it is used in Latin!" I know but all native speakers of Latin are dead. If you want the culture that is Latin to continue echoing down through the ages, you're going to want to have it applied to Internet-driven needs like c.f. this link.

Wiktionary tells me that c.f. is the wrong abbreviation of confer so prescriptivism has no claim on that string anyway.

So "c.f." means both "here is something supporting my argument" and "here is something contrasting with my argument". I will through it in the "no longer meaningful" bucket next to "bimonthly".
