What are people's theories on why Google acquired Fitbit? - brand? Google already has a decent hardware brand. - hardware expertise? Google already has that. - data? Android already provides way more data. - team? They could poach best people for way less than $2b. What's left?https://twitter.com/danprimack/status/1190253075115712512 …

Parts of writing for a living appeal to me and parts don’t, but if I was going to do it, there would be a lot of it for free and a little of it quoted in basis points.

They’ve got a decent hardware brand, but not a decent fitness brand. Honestly Fitbit with Google hardware expertise is a lot more compelling than either Fitbit or Google hardware on its own, to me

Fitbit has spent a decade caring almost entirely about fitness, Google has spent a decade getting good at hardware, but doesn’t really have a signature wearable. Seems like a synergy straight out of a business school class on strategic acquisition to me

That, or "Cancel X number of products by Q4," and they weren't going to make it without a major acquisition.

I’m not sure what hardware Google is renowned for? But this looks like an ecosystem play, similar to nest acquisition. Land grab in the market for R&D into future products.
