I studied Spanish for about 8 years prior to Japanese but have maybe low intermediate proficiency orally, slightly higher reading.

Have experienced situation similar in spirit. In hindsight it’s a bit funny to think of the momentary “stress” over finding the appropriate words knowing the other person will take the slightest deviation as an opportunity to strengthen the case for their failings&apologize.Thanks.
