One way of dealing with this problem is to call every bank sequentially and say “Could we impose upon your most senior system architect to chat about *extremely arcane* trivia?” And we can do that, too, but we can do it *everywhere, faster* by profiling responses.

What does "optimize the bitfields of card network requests"...um...mean? For those of us not intimately familiar with credit card networks.

So have you ever seen an API with a fixed width request or response format? Byte 43 might be a status flag allowing you to select one of three options. You’d assume, since the spec suggests that and says “optional”, that in the case answer was “none = 0” you should put 0.
