There's a huge number of $100+ an hour tutoring businesses to be built, and plausibly some very large companies serving as demand gen, around this. The need isn't new, at all, but the addressable scale is.https://twitter.com/philfreo/status/1187485837631602690 …

Any suggested ESL online courses/coaches for those wanting to improve their English, especially verbally? Wondering if there's a resource we could offer in cases where we interview really smart remote engineers where the biggest issue may be around ease of communication.

I know a relatively small number of Japanese professionals who paid "lawyer money" for either English practice or, from the one who was savviest, effectively just accent modification. (He worked in finance in NYC and his explicit goal was sounding "from nowhere in particular.")

(As long as we're doing storytime: I attempt to have my Japanese accent suggest "generic Tokyo salaryman, maybe a bit too polite" because when I let it drift into the accent/dialect that prevailed at my university or in Gifu people thought they were *hilarious* from a white guy.)

I am about to pay a guy almost $1000/hour and I think I would get a huge value out of it. Starting the meeting in 9 minutes :)

I'd say it's a bit much for improving your English ;-)

More than one friend in college paid tuition by tutoring ESL for wealthy international students. The most requested service wasn’t grammatical English, but idiomatic and pop culture English.

One question is how long in person interactions remain superior to automated solutions, which are already popping up, like this one: https://www.elsaspeak.com/home  But helping refer customers to automated solutions will still be a thing, so demand gen should still be profitable.

I used an accent coach who worked with actors years ago. Via Skype. I think it was 40$ per hour.

As Arnold Schwarzenegger said, you don't have to completely lose your accent, which after the teenage years is possible with reasonable effort only for a small subset of people with an accent, but you need to be understandable.
