I really think long-form essay writing (please please please don't call it blogging) for professional audiences is due to make a comeback, ideally tied to a better business model than advertising. Maybe it's Substack or maybe it is something else.

"But isn't blogging saturated?" I would struggle to name five high-quality, active blogs which are professionally relevant to me, and in addition to being in part of the graph which should be dense with them this is almost literally my job.

I think the demand has always been there; it’s a supply problem. How many people have the time and attention to create quality content like @stratechery?

Supply of competent commercial filmmakers boomed in wake of YouTube giving them a monetization model. I think there would be a lot more Stratechery-style writing in world if it decoupled requirement does entrepreneurial expertise from subject matter expertise to achieve goals.

Plausibly there should be as many people doing this as, I don't know, tax accounting, for a distribution of outcomes about as good. It feels to me like we are a good ways away from there.

I agree it's due. I don't like the idea of paid subscriptions for this. It results in paywalls and trials that are a lot like what news sites have turned into. Sure, that model makes money but it doesn't sit right with me as a reader when there are other free alternatives.

I think it will be more long form video content. I've found some really good channels on YouTube that are usually in the 25k-100k subscriber range that do this.

I'm baffled by long-form video content - I just don't get how people find time to watch it or where. I'm not going to watch it at my desk at work or my commute, where does it fit into people's lives? It clearly does work for lots of people! How do their lives differ from mine?
