If turnaround time at the gate is an important KPI for airline profitability, it boggles the mind that they don’t check bags for free and charge for carry on.

There’s a contradiction in what you are saying. If Business travelers are price insensitive why would they jump ship for a relatively small fee esp. if pitched as part of an “efficiency” benefit together with priority deplaning, etc. and included in prem/biz class ticket

Many business travelers are on economy tickets, per corporate policy. They’re insensitive with company’s money (won’t blink at spending extra $200 for convenient route or arrival time) but won’t be glad to pay out of pocket for extras.

But surely, airlines could grant this benefit to business travelers and disincentivize carry-on bags for everyone else?? The other question: would this really be more efficient?
