If turnaround time at the gate is an important KPI for airline profitability, it boggles the mind that they don’t check bags for free and charge for carry on.

Why would business travelers revolt? They're optimizing for number of minutes to the office/hotel, so they're checking always. Their ticket is covered already but if you ask them for money at check-in now they're out it until they get reimbursement approved.

Why would an airline care? Because business travelers are relatively price insensitive and make up a staggering portion of their ticket volume due to frequency of use. The LTV hit of convincing one to go with the competition over a ticky-tack baggage fee is *enormous.*

Business travelers would love this - company pays for carry-on bag, and less general stress, quicker turnarounds. I think the origin of charging for checked bags is they are heavier and more directly affect fuel costs.
