IMHO, the main advantage of gmail was (a) more storage space (at least back in ‘04) and (b) better spam detection. Not sure React would have helped with either of those?

Correct. Zero modern JS could run well on 15yo hardware and JS runtimes.

There already was yui and a pm with vision by 2005. Problem wasn't with PMs.

The problem with that counter factual is that browsers from 2004 would not have been able to do things that make pure JavaScript apps viable, you're missing local storage, websockets, many css features... IIRC 2004 was the very beginning of web 2.0 / AJAX wave
