I’m in the UK and recently started with an American company and they were taken aback by (but respectful of) my one month notice period. Some of my friends here in London have two- and three-month notices.

It can be good to mebtion about time required to make sure you don’t leave your former job without preparation, but you ate also allowed to just take a break. Very few companies worth their salt will be difficult about it

And if the company can’t do delayed start date for some reason, I’ve also seen people negotiate “I’ll start on August 1, then take 4 weeks of unpaid leave, and see you September 1.”

Depends on the company-some larger, more mature companies have very strict fiscal year hiring rules. Depends how much they want you, position etc. Further pointy hair rule one for coming in under budget is “leave headcount open for a couple of months”.
