Strong disagree; institutions are broadly awful at community and at generating happiness. This appears to be a social technology we have disimproved upon in recent years. There are times/places/scenes/friend groups/networks/etc on the Internet which are *magic.*https://twitter.com/jhooks/status/1181012451841544192 …

Taking it seriously: consider HN versus a university of your choice. Here, let’s take Harvard. Harvard clearly does some good in the world and has its share of problems. We tend to credit only one of those two factors for HN because of a disbelief the Internet could do the other.

I met some of my best friends via the internet or because of the internet. It's a net positive as far as I'm concerned

Whenever I've read anything about HN, it's always been good. I may be biased since I've myself immensely benefitted from HN. Where can I read counter views on HN? Would love to know why certain people don't seem to like it.

I read HN daily, I enjoy it but not whole heartedly. I find the commentary often overly cynical and contrarian (see the Dropbox slam). People compete to sound intellectual - comments are often written in an authorative tone even when the person clearly has gaps in their knowledge

Agreed. It often has a bent towards cynicism, but given the industry and the ratio of promises kept to promises delivered, I think much of that bent is warranted. In general, people are surprisingly open to conflicting opinions and voices, and generally encouraging.

I don't get all the HN hate. Some users are a bit too literal or direct, but the discussions in the comment section are some of the most insightful content on the internet. I feel like the majority of users are striving for truth (by way of honest debate)
