People often ask me why I live in Japan. A part: is that it is a place where I could take my daughter to lost-and-found to ask about an acorn, knowing that someone would return an acorn, knowing that someone would clearly expect a lost acorn to be returned and therefore ask.https://twitter.com/kiyotoshi_y/status/1179243144363331585 …

this is my limited experience of japan too. it is wonderful. but i find it hard to reconcile this with their selective cases of abuse, misogyny, and violence to each other. which makes it all the more unapproachable bc i dont understand the internal logic.

Glad to hear you haven't been arrested. Something like 98% of convictions in Japan are from confession, which results from indefinite pretrial detention.

I lived in Japan for many years. Before that I was always brought up to return everything. I still return everything I find in the US to lost and founds. There are too few Americans who do this.

it sounds like what you’re describing is empathy. i’m curious, though, how one reconciles that with the homogenization of culture that Japan is known for. i’d love to raise my son there, but if he’s a weirdo like me, i don’t want him hit with the conformity stick, acorns or no.

Honest question: do you think that a Black man living in Japan would have the same model of cops as functioning? (My impression, from time as a military dependent on Okinawa 30 years ago, is that skin color made a major difference in police attitudes, but I could be mistaken.)

Probably about as much as civil society has a model of black people as functioning members.
