People often ask me why I live in Japan. A part: is that it is a place where I could take my daughter to lost-and-found to ask about an acorn, knowing that someone would return an acorn, knowing that someone would clearly expect a lost acorn to be returned and therefore ask.https://twitter.com/kiyotoshi_y/status/1179243144363331585 …

Popular tweet in Japan: The tweeter found an acorn at a shopping mall and he brought it to the lost and found just in case a child has dropped it. At the lost and found there was the mother and the daughter who were there looking for it. He said he was truly surprised. https://twitter.com/lemon___hh/status/1178606509179060225 …

This observation is not about acorns or lost-and-founds, and I suffer from an inability to put into words what it *is* about, and I suspect that if I had words they would be viewed with extreme displeasure by people who didn’t have their acorns returned when they were kids.

An anecdote for you: My last encounter with police in Japan was walking approximately a mile to the station to drop off a Swiss Army knife abandoned in a park where children play. I was advised to call them next time so that they could come pick it up.

I have also been involved with approximately ten non-custodial interrogations with various police departments for e.g. looking suspiciously non-Japanese when riding a bicycle of unknown provenance, but even given that, had a sufficient model of cops as functioning to involve them

Beautiful thread. I think about this story so often: https://twitter.com/_TamaraWinter/status/685859666358714368?s=20 … It’s hard to succinctly capture the spirit of Japan at its best, but these anecdotes get us some of the way there. A level of trust and national camaraderie many places could only dream of.

It feels like it goes in the direction of "can I fundamentally trust the world to be considerate and return acorns when I lose them". The answer to this question has big impact on the feeling of belonging, safety etc. Personally, I connect it to someone brewing tea for me.
