Internet fist bump to the new grad who negotiated more than my first monthly salary extra with a single email.

Great advice for sure, but in terms of impact, isn’t this (approximately) zero sum?
-
Do you mean "Is negotiating zero sum?" or "Is feeling under the gun to continue being productively impactful?" zero sum? Feels like clear no on second. On first, don't believe so: improving division of the software value pie means more pie for everybody.

I'd not think you were in that race, more like enjoying impacting the world in so many different ways?
-
I immensely enjoy it, but I would like new merit badges, right? Like if that is the most impactful thing I've ever done at the end of my career I will be extremely sad. (That essay has a reasonably good argument for being the most impactful thing I've done as of today.)

To add to that, your article was a huge inspiration for http://levels.fyi too :)
-
Your salary level comparison tool is really good concept. Just hoping similar tools would be available for other markets outside of the USA, too.

Your article together with the book Never Split the Difference helped me get a 33% raise as a SWE. I did research, figured out what I was worth, and said "no" to every offer that didn't meet that criteria. Noes are much more valuable than easy yesses.

The “don’t read this on an iDevice” forward is fascinating in a way

I wouldn’t want to read it on a 4s.

It's evergreen. I used that article last year to negotiate a 20% bump.
