“Market need of whom, exactly?” Primarily people who get paid by the page view; secondarily folks who perceive their class interests to be in conflict with those of technologists. (That may be slightly redundant.)

And people find it difficult to defend the Designated Enemy against the charges, partially because they’ll be immediately asked about whatever caused them to be Designated, and partly out of the instrumental utility of having the Enemy not be them.

I don’t know how to operationalize this, other than realizing that one’s participation in today’s Two Minute Hate is generally optional, unless you’re paid by the page view.
