I think I also credit YouTube with greatly, greatly increased Japanese ability of many travelers, since a motivated student can get, hmm, 10X more listening practice, from a wide variety of linguistic targets, in one year than I got by majoring in it for four.

Not a daily occurrence, but I occasionally meet people who get off the plane with a better accent than I have after living here for 15 years.

“What’s a better accent?” Suffice it to say that is a complicated can of worms but the are able to successfully play the character they want to be playing automatically, in a contextually appropriate fashion. This requires no small degree of skill.
