Was there, in the entire world, a single teacher you could go to learn how to politely ask for a haircut with number two clippers in Japanese prior to YouTube? I think we underestimate the value created by the Internet so scandalously.

I think I also credit YouTube with greatly, greatly increased Japanese ability of many travelers, since a motivated student can get, hmm, 10X more listening practice, from a wide variety of linguistic targets, in one year than I got by majoring in it for four.

Not a daily occurrence, but I occasionally meet people who get off the plane with a better accent than I have after living here for 15 years.

“What’s a better accent?” Suffice it to say that is a complicated can of worms but the are able to successfully play the character they want to be playing automatically, in a contextually appropriate fashion. This requires no small degree of skill.

I got glasses while I was there last year and it was the most competent, pleasant, and fast experience I've ever had. I tell everyone to go to Japan for glasses now because, judging by my experiences, American glasses places are dreadfully incompetent.

Japan seems to enjoy effectively a free lunch on a lot of operational competence issues. My wife was *flabbergasted* when I told her that the lead time to get a birth certificate copy from Chicago would be about a month.

I don't think this is a thought original to me, but recently struck that YouTube is to the current <25 and under crowd what the internet was to ours - a place to discover knowledge, experiment with creative expression, build community, etc. Not sure if the "web" has the same pull

I'm in that demographic and what I personally observe is a shift. It's harder to find a dedicated forums/blogs of an interest on google and easier to search on YT for related channels. Googe returns sprawling subreddits with repeated posts instead of continuous discussion.
