It’s very hard to evaluate the effectiveness of anti-terrorism. There’s an incentive to publicize small successes, but if the FBI lucked out and narrowly averted a dirty bomb or something I wouldn’t expect to hear about it until long after the fact.

It’s amazing how much that’s been memory-holed. I remember looking at old electoral college maps in high school and wondering about Nixon’s blowout, then I read the beginning of Days of Rage and thought “oh, now I understand.”
