A cynical take that has immense explanatory value: “Privacy” is a marketing gimmick that only exists because Apple doesn’t own a search engine or a social network. Other than that, it appeals to pedophiles, terrorists, and weirdo cypherpunks—a very small market.

I think that it’s closer to: a) People value some forms of privacy extremely highly. b) People value privacy at margin highly *in the abstract, for themselves only* c) Revealed preference at margin is *extremely* low valued for overwhelming majority of users

Privacy advocates largely push for policies which would provide for a bit of precomittment strategy on marginal cases pretty much precisely because no person, not even most advocates, cares enough about them to change trivial details about their life on basis of them.
