To be fair, the apps are a lot better than they would have been 5 to 10 years ago, but core onboarding flows had a lot of “oh no you’re kidding me” moments (and not just around playing my favorite game “Figure out which version of my name the app will actually accept.”)

Coolest interaction was “Do you use SoftBank as a mobile carrier? If so click here to skip setup.” *tap* “Disconnect from wifi then hit Accept TOS button and SoftBank will stamp a token into an HTTP request which we’ll then use to reverse lookup your name and address from them.”

Using carrier network and billing records as a KYC proof and days entry accelerant is really smart. (I know many folks wouldn’t like this and if one misses the traditional 10 minutes of typing addresses from Japanese signup flows that is also an option.)
