There should be some sensible tradeoff like "If you, a worker, want maximum flexibility, you want to be Schedule C. If you want flexibility w/o running a business, Schedule U." and "If you, a business, want control of performance, W-2."

The character of work at McDonalds and Uber is very different, in a way which is salient to the workers, and we should legislate for that reality. If, in the middle of a shift at McDonalds, you get a text from your spouse re: childcare, and you leave between burgers, fired.
