Regardless of the legislated minimum wage, Uber et al are becoming the new de facto minimum wage. I talk to lots of startups that serve industries struggling w/labor supply. The reason? "Who wants to do [a dangerous or unpleasant job] when they can drive for Uber and make more?"

If one’s reference class is people who would otherwise be earning minimum wage, I would politely disagree. This has been noted by business associates of my father’s as creating a “creaming” effect in their labor supply.
