If an employer is willing to be abusive to you prior to hiring you, when you have maximum leverage and they are maximally incentivized to play nice, I think that gives you *extremely actionable* signal as to how they'll treat you when you're working there and dependent on them.

More than the wasted effort & well poisoning, you are reinforcing that the company values picking up a dollar off the floor more than making long-term, high-value, carefully cultivated investments, even if they are nearly free. What kind of outcome do you imagine that leads to?

Doesn't really matter. A few dollars means a lot more to the individual than it does to the company. Show respect to the people who work for you and take care of them. They will make you far far more money than the few extra dollars that you just tried to bilk them out of.
