I think this and remote work are the best bull case for WeWork. In 2025, every Fortune 500 company will have 10k+ remote workers, and every purchasing department will approve a reimbursement for WeWork with no questions asked.https://twitter.com/jasonlk/status/1161659165619523584 …

Not sure I would generalize the last one: offices have a branding value, both internal and external, and can help funding, especially from dumb money.

What’s the justification for a start up to pay the WeWork premium over a normal coworking space?

agreed. There has to be a company that can do some of the out of the box stuff for landlords, though unions may block that (saw it firsthand at a past startup I worked at...couldn't get internet for 2 weeks because union wasn't available and not allowed to hire someone else.)

Disagree. WeWork is full of noise and distractions. Startups should have a real office.

I get the remote work pitch but the calculus for WeWork seems way off. For ¥750k/month you can hotdesk 10 people in Shibuya WeWork, or you could rent a dedicated office seating (comfortably) 25 people. And yeah, if you’re fine with coworking anyways other options are 5x cheaper!
-
So either you’re a small cash strapped team where other cheap options are basically fine or your big enough to where alternatives are cheap enough to where the difference is enough to basically hire full time staff to do the “buy beer and keep the office from falling apart”

Real office space in japan can = more of a commitment to the biz (especially with deposits) but potentially less flexibility. For hiring Japanese employees though office first impression really matters.

We looked at WeWork for our 21 employee startup, and we couldn't stomach the nearly 3x price per square foot over a sublet. We have less cool art, but the coffee is better.
